Why should I join Harvard Book Store's Signed First Edition Club?
Each month, members receive a premium book of recent publication. A collection of signed
firsts will enhance any library, and many signed first editions appreciate in value.
Also, your membership supports Harvard Book Store, Harvard Square's literary landmark,
and ensures that we will be able to host our award-winning author event series for years
to come.
What is a signed first edition
and why is it valuable?
A first edition is the first printing of a book. First editions are distinguished from subsequent
printings, as they represent the closest edition in time and intent to the author's original work.
A signed first edition is a unique addition to any library, and to dealers and collectors, a signed first
edition is the most desirable--and valuable--edition.
What sort of books will I receive?
Our selections represent the forefront of literary fiction and nonfiction, and reflect the acclaimed
authors hosted by Harvard Book Stores award-winning event series. Harvard Book Store has had the
privilege of hosting authors such as Salman Rushdie, Joan Didion, David McCullough, Ian McEwan,
Junot Diaz, and Isabelle Allende. The books in this program are first editions, signed by the author.
Each book will be in pristine condition with book jacket covers that extend the shelf life of the book.
May I give a membership as a gift?
Of course! A gift subscription is a thoughtful, sui generis present for loved ones, recent grads,
and newlyweds alike. You may choose to give a gift membership for six months, one year, or indefinitely
and you may cancel the membership at any time. We also offer free gift wrapping. You may download and
print out a gift insert to give to the recipient. The inserts are available for
six month, one year,
and indefinite memberships.
Do I have to provide my credit card number?
Yes. In order to efficiently manage this unique program, we require that all members provide a
credit card number upon sign-up.
What if I don't want a certain month's selection?
While membership implies your interest in receiving a majority of our selections, members
are allowed to refuse the occasional book. Simply respond to our announcement email and
we'll remove your name from that month's list.
I'll be out of town and unable to pick up my selection. Is that okay?
We will hold books that are marked for pickup at the bookstore for 90 days. At that time,
we will refund your credit card and make the book available to other customers. If you'll
be out of town for more than 90 days, we suggest sending a friend in to pick up your book!
May I return a selection?
We will do our best to inform you of each month's selection before it is sent, so you can let us know
if you do not wish to receive it. That said, our standard return policy applies to the Signed First
selections. You are welcome to return any selection within thirty days of receiving it for a full
refund. We cannot refund the shipping costs, and returned books must be in their original condition.
How much does membership cost?
Membership is free. All you pay is the publisher's list price on the book ($22 - $28 on average per month)
and a flat shipping charge for us to send the book to your home each month. You may also choose to pick
up your selection each month at Harvard Book Store. And any books you receive through the Signed First
Editions Club do count toward your Frequent Buyer Card discounts.
Is there a limit to how many people can sign up?
Yes. As signed first editions are difficult to procure in large quantities, Harvard Book Store will limit
the number of members. If the member limit is exceeded, we will start a wait list.
Do the books I receive through the Club count toward my Frequent Buyer Card?
Absolutely.
I have a question that isn't answered here. Whom do I ask?
Ask a bookseller or write to us at signedfirst@harvard.com.
