"American Blandscapes: Risky Writing and the Forces that Silence It"
Cambridge Forum and PEN New England are pleased to present a panel discussion with area writers, editors, and booksellers on just what is and isn't being said in today's writing. This event is part of PEN New England's 'Freedom to Write' series. The importance of politically challenging fiction and poetry, from Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin to Allen Ginsberg's Howl is undeniable. Has such writing been effectively muffled by current trends in publishing? What is the cultural impact of such censorship? And what can an individual writer of conscience do? Carole Horne of Harvard Book Store, Jill Petty of South End Press, poets Mark Pawlak and Linda McCarriston, and poet and moderator Richard Hoffman will discuss the barriers to getting "risky" and important work that is being published.
