JORIE GRAHAM reads from Sea Change

Harvard Book Store is pleased to present Pulitzer Prize-winning poet JORIE GRAHAM reading from her new collection, Sea Change.

In Sea Change Graham's stirring voice and form take on our increasing awareness of the destruction we are inflicting upon our world. In poems that seem at times addressed to a future people, the speaker tries to describe what it was we took for granted--rain, a normal turn in season--and how we tried to awaken to the danger. She puts before us, in accurate and loving description, what this disappearing world was to us. The idea of an end of the world, while always a part of the human imagination and a common terrain for poetry, takes on a sudden reality that feels both unimaginable and shattering. And she manages, simultaneously, to fill us with a sense of sheer joy, even exuberance, in her praising of the beloved world. A sensuous and imaginative writer, Graham captures the beauty as well as the still incomprehensible mystery of the natural world as it seems to prepare to slip from view.
